The Mobile Pantry Program assists partner agencies with feeding up to 100 families in a single day food distribution. On the day of distribution, we deliver the food on a refrigerated truck to the site. Then we unload and distribute the food immediately. This helps eliminate the need for food to be stored by the agency. It also helps us get more fresh product to those in need before it spoils.
What is Distributed?
Each mobile pantry holds an assortment of items: protein, canned or fresh produce, dairy, and grains. This distribution allows us to provide a family with enough food for a week for just $10. A similar food mix from a grocery store could cost around $50. We also include recipe cards in the food boxes, which provide tips for preparing the food distributed.
Some high need items for mobile pantries, like peanut butter, rice or canned meat, are not always available through store donations. In that case, we may supplement the donated food items with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) commodities or purchase food in bulk.
What Makes Mobile Pantries Possible
Our Mobile Pantry Program is possible thanks to donation agreements Feeding America has with national and regional grocers. The Retail Store Level Pickup Program (RSLPP) gives us the opportunity to pick up from nearly 80 stores, collecting over 400,000 pounds of food each month. Grocery store donations provide the food bank with nutritious foods, like produce, meat and dairy, which can be quickly distributed to those in need through the Mobile Pantry Program.
